An Independent Electoral and Boundaries (IEBC) commissioner has said rumors that Kenyans in the diaspora will be voting at night are false.

“That is not true. We took a plenary decision to have people start and end (voting) at those statutory hours local times,” Commissioner Justus Nyang’aya said.

The clarification is a relief to diaspora voters, some of whom were concerned they might have to vote following the East African Time Zone.

“That is not true. We took a plenary decision to have people start and end (voting) at those statutory hours local times,” Commissioner Justus Nyang’aya.

Diasporans residing in countries outside Africa will take to the polls for the first time this year and vote in Kenyan embassies and consulate offices.

Less than 5000 Kenyans living abroad are registered to vote when presented with the opportunity, an underwhelming number that disappointed many in the diaspora voting rights movement.

Most diasporans shied away from registering because it would be too costly to travel to the Kenyan embassies and consulate offices where the registration was taking place.

The general election is scheduled for August 9, 2022.
