Teen Reporters Highlight 1,200 Child Gun Deaths One Year Since Parkland

Thursday, Feb 14, 2019, marks one year since the deadly mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland Fl., claimed the lives of 17 victims-14 students and three staff members.

In a powerful memorial message to mark the tragedy, more than 200 teen reporters from across the country, have teamed up with professional newspapers such as McClatchy Newspapers and Miami Herald to highlight 1,200 young victims, ranging from 0 to 18 years old, who have lost their lives to gun violence, since Parkland.

According to their website, Since Parkland, the teens have a message for all American adults, elected officials and the media– “you’re failing us.”

The tragic stories highlight gun deaths not just from mass shootings, but from drug homicides, armed domestic violence, unintentional discharges and stray bullets.

But despite the thousands of continued lost lives, nothing much as changed as politicians from the Republican side continue to stall in taking any steps to curb easy access to gun. There is little hope that the new Democratic majority in the House might push through some much-needed legislation to highlight the urgency of this problem, but there is little hope that such legislation would pass the GOP-controlled Senate and stands no chance of being signed by the NRA-friendly President Donald Trump.

While politicians continue to ignore their duty, these teens are refusing to be ignored and are telling the stories of their fallen peers.
