Goats are a delicacy in most parts of the world, and for the most part, their meat is more costly than beef or pork. But not on the Big Island, State of Hawaii. There you can have you goat and eat it too — for free.
The feral goats roam wildly on volcanic rocks, feeding on shrubs and indigenous plants.
While they look adorable to animal lovers, these hardy animals are blamed for the extinction of some indigenous plants in the delicate Hawaiian ecosystem because they pretty much eat anything.
One local said, “We don’t eat them,” when asked whether they enjoy goat meat.
“The meat smells,” he said.
Well, it’s true, goat meat has a gamey smell that some people cannot stand, but in Kenya, the scent is not a problem.
In response to the Hawaiian who complained about the smell, one Kenyan said they should slaughter them at a young age, but either way, it’s good meat.
But goats are not just for food. They can be pets, comfort animals or school mascots.
