Raila and Ruto at Chatham for Poll Question

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has won the first-ever Hot Seat News (HSN) Twitter poll on the question: Which presidential candidate will win the Mt. Kenya vote?

Odinga bested his August 9 election rival Deputy President William Ruto 65.1 percent to 34.9 percent. The Two-day poll was conducted before NARC Leader Martha Karua, popularly known as the iron lady, joined Odinga’s Azimio la Umoja coalition.

To be clear, this is not a scientific poll; instead, a pulse check conducted in several Kenyan political WhatsApp groups focused on Kenyan politics and Mt. Kenya politics, including one group composed of UDA supporters.

The survey was promoted in at least 5 WhatsApp groups with an average of 220 members. With 43 respondents, the survey should be considered inconclusive, but it’s an indicator that attitudes toward Odinga in the Mt. Kenya region are becoming more favorable.

HSN will commission more online opinion polls to check Kenyans’ pulse and give us a sense of the direction our presidential politics is taking.

While the poll might be encouraging to Azimio la Umoja supporters, the only poll that matters is the one on the election day, August 9, 2022.

The poll comes at a time when President Uhuru Kenyatta has taken a leading role in campaigning for Odinga and the favorable attitudes could be a result of Kenyatta’s influence and political clout in the region.
