President Donald Trump’s campaign text messages to supporters appear not to take the coronavirus pandemic outbreak seriously. Instead of promoting awareness of the pandemic, the campaign is exploiting coronavirus, by fundraising under the pretext of defending the president from attacks he has mismanaged the pandemic.

This article will highlight some mind-boggling text messages sent out after March 11, the day The World Health Organization (WHO) declared coronavirus a global pandemic.

Here are a few examples:

For the record, I’m not affiliated with the Trump campaign.

None of the texts so far have asked supporters to volunteer to help those affected or show solidarity with heavily impacted states such as New York, where almost 10,000 people have died from the deadly virus.

Many cannot imagine that a presidential campaign could be this detached from the gravity of an issue that is killing thousands of Americans, wreaking havoc on the economy and brought the whole nation and the world to a standstill. Shockingly, the Trump campaign has not taken a moment to ask supporters, who are healthcare professionals, to join the fight in New York or other hard-hit areas to help defeat COVID-19.

It is appalling that the text messages seem to focus solely on fundraising by name-calling opponents and attacking the media and not in managing the pandemic that is killing thousands of Americans. On April 1, the day US COVID-19 death toll passed the 5,000th mark, the campaign sent the following anti-media text message petition to supporters, attributed to Trump.

“Pres Trump: The Left is trying to keep me off the airwaves, I need you on my side. DEMAND THEY AIR OUR PRESS-BRIEFINGS! Sign the petition NOW.”

Since the beginning of the year until April 11, the campaign has sent 114 text messages, only 1, a text message sent March 12 seen below, addressed the coronavirus pandemic directly.

March 12,

Trump’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic will perhaps go down in history as the worst by any leader in the world.

Unlike crises faced by his predecessors — George W. Bush, 9–11 terrorist attacks and Hurricane Katrina or Barack Obama, 2008 recession, Hurricane Sandy, and The Sandy Hook mass shooting — where the comparisons were between previous administrations, the coronavirus pandemic pit Trump against other world leaders, as well state governors.

He performed just as you’d expect an athlete with a broken leg would in a 100-meter dash.

Throughout the process, Trump has been the opposite of steady and assuring leadership. His conflicting messages created confusion in public and may have led a lot of Americans not to take the threat seriously. Polls show Trump supporters, especially Fox News viewers, thought the threat was exaggerated and failed to comply with stay-home orders.

The Washington Post has documented 33 times Trump downplayed coronavirus.

He rightly created The White House Coronavirus Task Force, led by Vice President Mike Pence and composed of respected scientists such as Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, but he has not allowed them to take charge of informing the public.

Playing spokesman and POTUS, Trump has used the White House Coronavirus Update Press briefing podium as a substitute for his political rallies. Hogging the stage, getting into a war of words with reporters over petty issues, bragging about his Facebook following, congratulating himself and making false statements easily proven wrong upon scrutiny or contradicted with his own statements.

Trump has painted a rosier picture than the reality on the ground and dominating the speaking time instead of allowing the scientists in the Taskforce to speak and answer questions.

Over 20,000 people have already died because of COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus and Trump’s actions leading to the pandemic are coming under intense scrutiny.

According to the Washington Post, The Trump Administration received the first formal notification of the coronavirus outbreak in China on Jan 3, 2020.
