Kenya’s Supreme Court, known as SCOK (Supreme Court of Kenya), will be a bustling and crowded place this week.
The seven justices and their staff will have to sift through a mountain of evidence delivered in a truck by the Azimio la Umoja team and read through hundreds of pages in petitions, responses, and affidavits from the litigants.
As if that’s not enough, they’ll have to deal with more than 200 lawyers representing all the parties involved.
Azimio has contracted 42 lawyers, Kenya Kwanza 53, and the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has hired 26 law firms. Busia County Senator-elect and human rights advocate Okiya Omtata is coming. Also expected to make his appearance is defeated Kiambu gubernatorial candidate Moses Kuria, who has filed a petition in support of affirming Deputy President William Ruto as the winner of the presidential contest.
In a historic first, the IEBC will appear in the court divided. Four commissioners, including Vice Chairperson Juliana Cherera, have rejected Chairman Wafula Chebukati’s decision to declare Ruto the winner of the presidential contest. The commissioners have submitted affidavits critical of the opaque and unilateral manner the chairman handled the tail end of the process and made explosive allegations undermining the election’s outcome.
